Music

When in our music God is glorified,

And adoration leaves no room for pride,

It is as though the whole creation cried:

Alleluia!

Since our founding in 1815, the distinguished music program at St. John’s, Lafayette Square has played an integral role in parish life. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect of our historic building, served as the church’s first organist. Through the years, excellent music has enhanced the worship and lifted the spirits of parishioners and visitors to St. John’s.

Our choirs are central to St. John’s worship life and share responsibility for Sunday morning services, Choral Evensong, and special offerings including a Requiem for All Souls’ Day and our beloved annual service of Christmas Lessons & Carols. Our Midweek Music series welcomes tourists and local guests for free lunchtime concerts by a wide range of local artists. Our Chorister Program for children and youth offers free professional-level training in music to area students. Whoever you are, there is a place in St. John’s music ministry for you!
